Nowadays, each university does what they think is appropriate, with the majority still accepting the baccalaureate and high school grades. However, could the minority have sensed a broken system?
We do have a Romanian Association of Debate Public Speaking and Rhetoric (Asociația Română de Dezbateri Oratorie și Retorică - ARDOR) - A recent article published on their website, mentioned a couple of arguments for and against the introduction of the entrance examinations.
Reasons to have an entrance examination:
Number 1: The baccalaureate is an exam that is bound to examine the students for their high school knowledge in three fields of study. When exams take place, other factors intervene as well, like stress, emotions, lack of sleep, tiredness, therefore the results are not always accurate. Hence, it is not the best result to be used as the university entrance examination.
Number 2: The students don’t exactly attend a university that is a perfect match for them and what they like doing, but rather one that accepts them and their baccalaureate grades. Therefore, a lot of times they are not the right fit for that, as they are not tested in that field. A lot of students are very confused after the first year of study and choose another university later, causing a waste of educational/financial resources.
Reasons against entrance examinations:
Number 1: Having one more exam, after the baccalaureate, adds extra pressure and sources of stress and depression on top of everything. More that that, the time the students can prepare for that new exam is limited, as they are studying for the baccalaureate as well.
Reason 2: The baccalaureate exam is not just testing the students in the three fields tested, it is checking them for their abilities to concentrate, study and focus their attention.
So, what do you think?
