I am happy to have introduced an amazing synthetic phonics programme that would get children aged 5-6 reading and writing skills up to 1 year ahead of their peers. It all started two years ago with the preparatory class and the results were wonderful because Jolly Phonics is a multi-sensory phonics programme.
This programme is used in over 100 countries around the world, with over half a dozen using Jolly Phonics as government policy. The English government has made synthetic phonics government policy for delivering early literacy and Jolly Phonics is a recommended resource starting with Reception in British schools.
Jolly Phonics is a commercial programme developed by UK primary teachers Sue Lloyd and Sara Wernham, and published by Jolly Learning Ltd. Jolly Phonics is backed up by rigorous research. There have been several academic studies: at the University of Toronto in Canada, in England and in Scotland. All studies found that after a year of use, on average, the students reading age was a year ahead and spelling slightly further.
The boys did as well as the girls, and there was no difference for English Language Learners vs Native English speakers. The number of children requiring remedial help was dramatically reduced using Jolly Phonics, and it was proven beneficial for children with Special Education Needs (SEN).
Available for anyone
Jolly Phonics is a 2-year programme that can be done in preparatory and grade 1 in both private and state Romanian or international schools. Each sound (42 of them in the English Language) has a story, song and action that go with it. It therefore reaches all the learning modalities VAKT (auditory, visual, kinesthetic and tactile).
After learning the first 6 sounds (s, a, t, i, p, n) the children are blending and reading words like sat, pin, tip, at, nip.... This makes the children confident readers after only a few lessons! All of the JL materials are available for schools or in home use.
Jolly Phonics is folowed by Jolly Grammar 1-5 which teaches the structured side of literacy and covers spelling rules, punctuation, parts of speech, dictionary use and tenses. Parts of speech are taught using actions and colours to help children with parsing (identifying parts of speech).
For example, the colour for verbs is red and the action is to clench fists and move arms backwards and forwards as if running. These methods help students remember grammar rules. Jolly Grammar developed from the belief that it is helpful for children to be taught the structured side of language separately from the more creative side of writing.
Jolly Phonics/Grammar is the best I've seen in my 25 years of teaching in 3 different school systems: Romanian, Italian and PYP curricula. I am also a JP Professional Trainer and I attended Jolly Learning Trainers Conference in London last month. Therefore, I conduct Jolly training for English language teachers throughout Romania and beyond.
